Do you know the #1 reason why you need to become an Amazon Pro Merchant today? It might not be what you think. Keep reading to find out more.
What is a Pro Merchant?
There are two types of Amazon selling accounts:
- Individual Selling – This type of account is free.
- Professional Selling (also known as Pro Merchant) – This type of account costs $39.95 per month.
It’s Not About the Money
Whether it’s on the Amazon forums or on a Facebook group, new sellers are always asking, “When should I become a pro merchant?” or “When should I upgrade to a professional selling account?”
The most common answer I hear from more experienced sellers is, “As soon as you’re selling 40 items per month, you’re losing money if you’re not a Pro Merchant.” The logic behind this answer is that Individual sellers pay an extra $1 fee (on top of other Amazon fees) on every order. If you’re a Pro Merchant, this extra $1 fee is waived.
While this is technically correct, it’s not the best answer.
It’s About the Buy Box
If you don’t have a Professional Selling account, you are not eligible to win the This refers to the situation where a sel… More.
The seller who wins the Buy Box is the one who gets the sale when a buyer clicks, “Add to Cart” from the product page.
It’s an incredibly valuable position to be in, as the majority of sales on Amazon go through the Buy Box!
If you’re not in the Buy Box, the majority of customers won’t even be aware that you’re selling the item!
And if you’re not a Pro Merchant, you’re not eligible for the Buy Box.
Let me say that again:
If you’re not a Pro Merchant, you’re not eligible for the Buy Box.
It’s Not a Discount, It’s an Advantage
You’re not paying $39.95 per month to save $1 on the items you sell, you’re paying it to have an advantage that will help you sell more items.
Of course, there’s a big “but” coming.
It’s a huge advantage, but it takes more work to win the Buy Box.
Amazon bases the winner of the Buy Box based on a few different factors, including:
- Fulfillment method
- Sales price
- Seller metrics, including A performance rating on a scale of 1 to … More percentage
You can be an FBA seller, with the Simply the lowest price an Amazon… More and have 100% positive feedback, but if you’re not a Pro Merchant, you’ll never win the Buy Box.
Of course, if you’re a Pro Merchant, with terrible feedback and a high price, you probably won’t win it either.
But having the Pro Merchant account will at least let you compete for the Buy Box. Getting everything else right is up to you (but at SellerEngine, we can help, whether it’s with real time repricing, or giving your Amazon account a tune up.).
