Getting started: choosing your seller name

  • December 11, 2014
Reading time: 2 minutes

helloNameTag2Just like going to the gym, our research shows that there’s an influx of new sellers in the beginning of every year.

That’s great! We’re always excited to see people strike out on their own and start their own businesses.

However, as more experienced sellers know, there are plenty of mistakes you can make when selling on Amazon. Today we’re going to tackle one of the easiest errors to avoid: choosing the wrong seller nickname.

Keep reading to learn more.

Don’t Choose a Common Name

When picking your Seller Nickname, don’t choose something that’s too common. This is for a couple of reasons:

  1. It’s probably already taken.
  2. Even if it’s available, it might be too similar to someone else’s and you don’t want to confuse customers. This is especially important if you plan on having a website in addition to your Amazon store.

Avoid Using Negative Words

Your Seller Nickname is your brand. Don’t use anything bawdy, negative, or even borderline inappropriate, even as a joke. A good example would be the nickname, “Danger Falling Prices.” It’s a (somewhat) clever name, but the negative connotations of the word Danger outweigh the positives.

Choose Something that Stands Out

When customers are browsing the offer page, a nickname that stands out can help you make a sale.

offersPage

Part of this, of course, is creating a great image to use as the logo for your account (we’ll talk about this in a post next week).

To me, the HUPPIN’S offer stands out because of the large clear image. I also like the name Secondipity, as it seems like they specialize in selling second-hand items. However, in this case they’re selling something that’s new.

That leads us to our next rule:

Future Proof Your Name

Amazon businesses are fluid and always evolving. Even if you’ve got a warehouse full of toys to sell today, in 2 years, you might find that home goods or grocery items are making up most of your profit.

Don’t choose a name that focuses on what you sell or how you sell it. Those things can (and probably will change). Instead, pick a name that focuses on the positive aspects of your business, that won’t change over time.

Don’t Break any Laws

This sounds obvious, but I’ve seen sellers attempt to trick buyers by using names like: Wall Mart, Amozon, or Bestest Buys. These sellers don’t last long.

Nothing Hard to Remember

Don’t use really weird combinations of letters and numbers. Try to come up with a nickname that is easy to remember so buyers can find you again.

This is especially important if you sell through multiple channels: eBay, Amazon, your own website, a brick & mortar store. If you’ve got one name across all your marketplaces, you’ll be more memorable and easier to find.

Share Your Seller Nickname

Think you’ve got a great nickname for your Amazon businessAmazon Business is Amazon’s wholesale ... More?

I picked this name because I sell Polish pottery and my husband is Polish and from Poughkeepsie. A natural choice. I use this name on eBay also and wanted to be consistent. Glad I checked this site as I was about to use something too product specific (lots of diff Polish pottery forms and patterns). This covers all that I sell or want to sell. Thanks for the guidance.

Happy New Year, my husband and I just signed up to start selling FBA, this is totally new to us. I have had several successful businesses, but never in e commerce or retailing. We are thinking it makes sense to incorporate at the beginning for tax and liability purposes, so are trying to come up with a name that will work no matter what direction the business takes. We would appreciate your input. So far I was thinking “West Side Mercantile”,
or L A Mercantile ( or L&A, our names are Lesley and Aldo). Do you think those are too long or hard to remember?

Thank you for your comment. West Side Mercantile sounds just fine. Lesley and Aldo Mercantile could be your alternative, in case the other one is already in use. Come to think about it, the latter could actually be better; your names in there make it sound like buyers won’t hit a cold corporation when writing in, but actually address their question to a human being. That could work in your benefit.
As for starting to sell online as FBA, please feel free to email us with any questions or concerns about your Amazon business. We have experts who can help you with the setup, from the very beginning to the point where you can actually start selling your products.

I’m assuming you should treat this is a a real business name that you need to register like a sole proprietorshipan and to use for relabeling as well?

      Hi Tammy,

Thank you for your comment. The seller name does not necessarily need to be the same with your company name, but you do need to have your business backed up by either registering as a company or as sole proprietor. You can register your business as “AAA Inc.” and sell on Amazon as “AAA Best Price”. Be careful not to break any copyright laws.

      Cheers!

      Hi Chris,

Thank you for your comment and for following our blog! It’s always good to have services to refer to when needed.

With regards to your question, there is no service that allows you to check if the seller name that you want to have is unique or is already taken on Amazon. However, a workaround that worked in the past was that of writing the name you wanted to have on google followed by “at a glance” (for instance Chris Amazing library at a glance). If the name is taken then Google would display the link to the Amazon storefront for that seller.

You can give it a try with this workaround or try to do a bit of research on Amazon first before making the final decision.

I wish you the best of luck with your business!

Great article. Just trying to get started to sell on Amazon and slowly figuring it all out. My question is why is there a name of “by” under the title and then a different “sold by” name on a listing? Some listings have the two names and some have the same name for both.

      Hi Patti,

      Thanks for your comment.
What you see right under the title should be the brand name, and under “sold by” the seller name. Sometimes the brand owner is also selling the product and in that case the listing has the same name for both (eg. here)

      I hope it helps.

The brand name you suggested can definitely be used for selling in multiple categories (especially novelty), and it’s quite common for sellers to use the brand name as their display name on Amazon too. The only argument for the display name could be that it’s not necessarily pointing to a particular feature or business model or deals, but then again, most brand names aren’t, so go for it. Best of luck with your selling.

I enjoyed your post. I am rebranding myself so that I don’t have to have any loyalty to the products I sell since they change from time to time. What do you think of calling myself “The Pop Up Shop”? I like it because pop up shops are trendy here in NYC at the moment. What do you feel about it?

      Hi there,

Thanks for reading the post and for reaching out with your question. While Pop Up shops are currently popular, my understanding is that they are short term shops so, for that reason, I’d examine what you’re hoping to communicate to your customers with your branding. And whether or not the idea of short term is in line with that. Another thought is that ‘The Pop Up Shop’ doesn’t really contain anything unique or special that might help you stand out. It sounds fairly generic. If you’re set on the idea of using ‘Pop Up Shop’ maybe you can put something unique to your branding before it. Like ‘insertwordhere Pop Up Shop’. Just a few thoughts. Let us know if you have any follow up questions.

I hope this helps! Thanks again for reading.

You can use whatever name you want, as long as you’re the sole person who has the legal rights to use the name in your industry. Our suggestion would be, just to keep your mind at ease, to consider speaking with a lawyer when choosing your brand name, to make sure you’re abiding by all laws. Hope this helps!

Thank you for your comment. You’ve got some good ideas going so far. I like Nina&Ella or Brasileira. Flipflop is one I would be careful with. It’s a shoe style but flop also is used to describe things that aren’t successful or useful. Often times, it’s best to avoid using words that might invoke negative feelings from a buyer, even if they mean something else in context. I hope that makes sense. Do let me know if you have other questions or name ideas. I’d be happy to give them a look.

      Hi Keyosha,

Thanks for reaching out to us and congrats on your growing business! As long as that user name isn’t already in use on Amazon by another account, you should be fine to use that seller name. I think the name sounds great. At first glance, my brain read ‘sell sit all’ rather than ‘sells it all’ but it became clear pretty immediately after. That may be a common occurrence but I don’t see the harm in it. Once it’s read right, it makes sense and communicates a diversity of products. So if you really are “selling it all” then I think it’s a good fit.

First of all, I love your name. I think it’s really pretty, and it could make a good store name too! SarikaSales or SarikaShop both sound cool. Since you’re planning on selling an array of different items, you really have a lot of creative freedom here. Just keep in mind that you’ll want it to be easy to remember, and have a good flow. If you want to talk about this further please feel free to email me at services@SellerEngine.com. And don’t forget to let us know what you decide on!

    Thanks,
    Vanessa

    Hi,
I’m getting ready to start a Amazon business. What do you think MorgenSays_Shop. I was using Sellingsmiles2u on EBay. I wasn’t sure if I should use the same one on Amazon.

    Thanks

      Hi Debra,

MorgenSays_Shop is a great name. The only thing I would suggest is that customers might have trouble remembering the underscore when doing a search for you. Sometimes it can be hard for people (me included) to remember whether to use an underscore or a hyphen. Best of luck! Please let us know if you need any further help or coaching. We are always happy to help new sellers! We can be reached at services@SellerEngine.com.

      Thanks,

For years, I have used the first few letters of my first (Je), middle (Tho), and last name (Ho) as usernames for website logins, and social media like instagram. Do you think Jethoho could be an acceptable name or is it too random? I’m worried it may be harder to build a brand around that name. Also, do you think it is a good idea once I have decided on a name to make a gmail account using that name and use that when signing up to become an Amazon seller? Thanks!

    Hello Jesse,

    Thank you for your question.
The name you chose is definitely acceptable. One aspect to consider, though, is that it doesn’t really say much about the business, product line, purpose, values, etc. So it could work as a brand name, but you may consider using a more explicit Display name as a seller on Amazon. It’s not mandatory, of course, just a suggestion. And if you focus on selling in the US, one other thing to keep in mind is that your brand name should be easy to remember and spell, for customers to be able to quickly type it in when looking for your products. Hope this is useful. As for using the brand name in the registration email, sure, no problem there. Thank you.

Hi, I’m having a hard time with this..I would like to sell in many different categories and I was thinking of something along the lines of
    multi-mom supply
    Multi-mom enterprise
    Multi-mom direct

Should I include the word task?

My thoughts are moms wear many hats and I would like to sell in many different categories I would like my targets to be women…

So what do you think? Too stupid?

Hello Marjorie, there’s no such thing as a stupid name 🙂
Are you targeting moms or women in general? “AllForMom” or “AllForHer” or “Mom’s Supplies” came to mind too, though you may feel they don’t really touch on the idea of a multi-mom? If that’s the case, then MultiMom Supply would work best if you ask me.

      Hi Joseph,

Thanks for reaching out to us! And welcome to the fun and hard working journey as an Amazon Private Label seller! I think any of those names you’ve chosen would work well. I tend to like the JappettaIntl one but I’d only go that route if you plan to sell and ship your products globally.

We offer some really great custom Private Label solutions. Please check us out when you’re ready to automate your processes.

Thanks again and let me know if you have other questions!

    Hello,
I was thinking about selling things on Amazon that I have bought at a store, that have not been used. Do I need proof that the items have not been used? Do I need to talk to a lawyer and obtain a legal business name, or can I make something up to use for selling on Amazon without lawyers? Are there brands of things that I cannot sell on Amazon?

      Hi Candice,

Thanks for your questions. As far as proof that your items are new, it would depend on the nature of the items. If they were sealed in a box or wrapper then the packaging should be sealed and intact. Clothing should have the tags on it, etc. If the items don’t come with their own packaging then you might consider adding your own. Amazon generally wouldn’t ask for proof that the items are new unless you receive a complaint, and if that happens then you’ll be asked to provide invoices for your products. Amazon won’t accept retail receipts as invoices, FYI.

As for your business name, you can choose whatever you feel best suits your business. There’s no need to involve a lawyer as long as you follow the guidelines written about in the above post.

There are certain brands and categories that are gated on Amazon, that means that you’d have to be approved to sell them. You can find a list here. https://sellercentral.Amazon.com/gp/help/external/200333160?language=en-US&ref=mpbc_14113001_cont_200333160 We do offer ungating services, if you decide you want to sell a restricted brand or in a gated category. If you do, then please reach out to us at services@SellerEngine.com and we can give you more information.

      Thanks!

I love the feedback you give on possible store names! I’ve been selling stuff casually on eBay for years and have decided to turn it into my part time job. Of course, I’m totally hung up on choosing a store name. I plan on selling mostly clothing (mens, womens and kids), but also other items. Here are some of my ideas:
    Bay HIll Boutique
Mimosa Junction (because I love the Mimosa tree in my yard, not the drink)
Mrs Hall’s Closet (my eBay user name includes Mrs Hall)

      Hi Christy,

I’m always a fan of a good pun, so my vote is for Mrs Hall’s Closet. 🙂 They’re all good though!

    Vanessa,
I’m looking for a clever business name but concerned I won’t be seen as a serious seller, what are your thoughts?
Also, if I’m not using a website, only using the Amazon FBA platform, do I need to limit my business name to something easy to spell?
By the way, I haven’t settled on a particular niche or a target audience yet.

      Hi,

There’s no reason why you can’t have a little fun with your seller name. If you’re using FBA, and if you’re winning the Buy Box, then chances are buyers won’t see your individual seller name at all. They’d just click on the box and it would automatically order your product.

It never hurts to keep things simple and easy to spell, but keep in mind that buyers on Amazon don’t generally search for items by seller name. Let us know when you figure out your niche, and we can brainstorm with you!
