Millions of people woke up this morning to an email from Amazon in their inboxes.

I’ve been an Amazon Prime member for a few years now (and shared an account with my parents starting in around 2006). I use Prime nearly everyday, usually for watching TV series (Veronica Mars, Hannibal, etc.). Last Christmas I did 100% of my shopping through Amazon Prime (one package from Warehouse Deals arrived missing several parts, but it was a quick and easy return). And once in a while, I’ll check out a book for my Kindle.
Will I stop using Amazon Prime now that the price has increased to $99 a year? Absolutely not. It’s about what I pay per year for Netflix and I’d rather stop using Netflix than Amazon Prime. The value is just that good.
As a quick aside (and to explain the title of this post), many people speculated that the original $79 price point was chosen because 79 is a prime number. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but it makes sense to me, considering Jeff Bezos’s clever sense of humor (remember the Milliravi story from the Everything Store?)
Back to Amazon Prime.
The $99/year price is still a bargain. Personally, I’ve never met anyone who didn’t love their Amazon Prime subscription.
Plus, the increase only works out to about an extra 6 cents per day.
I’ve heard lots of Amazon sellers worry that fewer people will be interested in Prime now, reducing the value of FBA selling. However, I don’t think 3rd-party Amazon sellers have much to worry about. In fact, the amount of publicity this (smaller than expected) price increase will get may help increase overall awareness of just how awesome Amazon Prime is.
