Sales Rank is Just a Number
When you see an item’s Sales Rank, how do you know what it means? In the past we’ve talked about the value of Historical Sales Rank, but even that doesn’t tell the whole story.
When you’re looking at an item’s current Sales Rank, you also need to know how that stacks up against other items in the category.
What’s better? A Sales Rank of 1,000,000 in books or 1,000,000 in toys? That one might seem obvious, since Books is such a huge category, but what about comparing Sales Ranks between Health & Personal Care and Clothing and Accessories?
Number of Items in Top Categories
Here’s a chart I put together that shows the number of items in several top categories on Amazon.com, as of today, May 5, 2014.
Category | Number of Items | Top 10% |
Beauty | 1,910,654 | 191,000 and lower |
Books | 36,221,882 | 3,622,000 and lower |
Cell Phones & Accessories | 10,085,052 | 1,000,000 and lower |
Clothing & Accessories | 4,414,895 | 441,000 and lower |
Electronics | 22,638,305 | 2,263,000 and lower |
Grocery & Gourmet Food | 634,313 | 63,400 and lower |
Health & Personal Care | 4,346,934 | 434,000 and lower |
Home & Kitchen | 15,335,938 | 1,533,000 and lower |
Office Products | 3,659,501 | 365,000 and lower |
Sports & Outdoors | 17,190,720 | 1,719,000 and lower |
Toys & Games | 2,560,438 | 256,000 and lower |
How to Use the Chart
When you’re reviewing an item in one of those categories, compare it to the chart above and divide to figure out how it stacks up.
For example a book with a Sales Rank of 1,000,000 would be in the top 3%, which isn’t too shabby!

Hi,
Is there a way to pull the total numbers in any given category? I use to use the bracket trick “[]” but Amazon seems to have pulled the plug. Thanks.
Hi Jenni,
Yes, looks like it no longer works. Another option is to use something like “-gd5i3ndei3nkeole” and count total by subcategory. Basically if you want to get the total number of products under baby count the following:
Baby & Toddler Toys (162,906)
Baby Stationery (2,236)
Bathing & Skin Care (341,852)
Car Seats & Accessories (13,179)
Diapering (56,021)
Feeding (150,139)
Gear (18,083)
Gifts (130,714)
Health & Baby Care (33,620)
Nursery (268,055)
Potty Training (4,101)
Pregnancy & Maternity (3,126)
Safety (17,521)
Strollers & Accessories (14,411)
I hope it helps,
Maria

Because sales rank is just a number and doesn’t tell full story. Is there a way of scanning barcode and an app saying this rank puts items in top 10% Of sales rather than State the rank?
