Keeping on top of your Amazon seller fees is the starting point to running a successful business on Amazon. So, what will your profit be once Amazon has taken their cut?
You have to hand it to Amazon; it’s been in business for over a decade, but never charged a listing fee. So, what does Amazon charge you? Here’s a breakdown of Amazon selling fees for third-party sellers:
Amazon.com selling fees for third-party sellers
Professional Selling Plan | Individual Selling Plan | |
---|---|---|
Monthly subscription fee | $39.99 | no |
Per-item fee | no | $0.99 on each item sold |
Referral fee | Sellers pay the greater of the category-specific referral fee or per-item minimum referral fee. The first is usually 15% of the sale price, while the minimum referral fee can be $0, $1 oe $2. | |
Variable closing fee | For each media item that is sold, sellers also pay a standard fee of $1.35. |
The Specifics:
1. Monthly subscription charges depend on the marketplace. They’re $39.99 on Amazon.com for Pro Merchants (sellers with a professional selling plan) with over 35 sales per month.
2. The per-item fee also depends on the venue. Amazon.com individual sellers pay $0.99.
3. Referral fees are based on product category. Amazon will charge whichever of these two is higher for each item:
a. Referral Fee as a percentage of sale price. It ranges from 6% to 20% (45% for Amazon devices), but it’s usually 15%.
b. Minimum Referral Fee of either $0 or $1. Jewelry and watches are the only two categories with a rate of $2.
E.g.: You’re listing items in the Everything Else category for over $6.67. Amazon will charge you 15% of the sale price, not the $1.00 minimum referral fee, because 15% of 6.67 is over $1.
4. Variable Closing Fees apply strictly to books, music, videos, DVDs, video games, consoles and software (BMVD products), and they will vary according to category, shipping destination, and the type of shipping service used.
So, how much would it cost you to sell on Amazon?
Let’s take two examples.
Pro Merchant Amazon Selling Fees for a book
As mentioned above, an Pro Seller would be charged a referral fee and variable closing fee.
In our example, the referral fee is $4.07 (15% of $27.13) and the variable closing fee is $1.35 summing up to $5.42. So, for a sale price of $200 and assuming the shipping credit covers transportation costs, sellers would have to hand over $31.35.

In the case of this toy sale on Amazon US, there’s a referral fee of $9.89 (15% of the product charge and shipping cost), shipping credit and monthly subscription aside.
