200+ Million Items in the Amazon.com Catalog

Can you believe it? There are more than 200 million items in Amazon.com’s catalog. In fact, as of this writing there are 211,299,195 items. And by the time you finish reading this email, there’s likely to be several thousand more.

Last September, the catalog contained 164,429,479 items. That’s an increase of nearly 175,000 items a day! According to the Food Marketing Institute, the average number of items carried in a supermarket is nearly 40,000.

That means that Amazon is adding more than 4 grocery stores full of unique products, every day of the week.

Let’s take a look at these charts that show just how much, and how fast, the Amazon.com catalog is growing.

Amazon.com Catalog Size

Now let’s look at books. The size of this catalog is growing quite slowly, compared to other categories:

Catalog Size Growth

It’s amazing that after nearly 20 years, there are still thousands and thousands of books to be added to the catalog!

Home and Kitchen is another popular catalog, especially for users of Profit Bandit, who participate in retail arbitrage  It’s the practice of buying pro... More or who find inventory at thrift shops:

You can see that in some cases, millions of catalog items are being added every quarter.
