Weekly Amazon News

This week in Amazon news, fulfillment centers bring jobs to Florida, Sopranos DVDs are hot sellers, no more color Nooks from Barnes & Noble and more.

Amazon Goes Big in Florida – Amazon plans to bring more than 3,000 jobs to Florida! They’re planning several fulfillment centers in the state. However, this means that Floridians will no longer be able to avoid sales tax on their purchases.

Sopranos Sales Soar – Sales of Sopranos DVDs and digital videos shot up drastically this past week due to the passing of James Gandolfini. Cultural events can greatly affect demand for products that are otherwise slow sellers. Other events that can influence pricing include Pulitzer Prize, Oscar and Grammy nominations.

No More Color Nooks – Earlier this week Barnes & Noble announced that they are ceasing production on their Nooks with color screens. Discontinued products can be big sellers on Amazon, as they often have a small but fiercely loyal following (see: The Zune). Could be a good time to stock up and hold for future sales.

Dick’s Sporting Goods Competes with Amazon – This is an interesting article about how Dick’s Sporting Goods has managed to thrive and increase profits as Amazon and other retailers have been content to simply increase sales without increasing profit at the same rate.
