New vs. Used Buy Box
Below you’ll see how the Buy Box looks by default (on the left) and then how it looks with a used offer selected, on the right.
It’s clear that the Buy Box pushes customers towards buying items in new conditionProducts can only be listed on Amazon if... More. By my math, the Buy Used area at the bottom takes up less than 9% of the entire Buy Box.
But, it does give customers the option of buying used, right from the Buy Box, which is a huge change.
How Will Buyers React?
Only time will tell, but I believe that the used Buy Box will take some time to really catch on with customers. Here’s my logic:
- If the price for the new Buy Box and the used Buy Box are comparable, there’s no reason for a customer to buy used. They’ll just stick with the default.
- There’s still a stigma associated with buying used for many customers. Especially in the case of gifts, etc. If the used Buy Box offer is significantly lower than the new Buy Box offer, customers may believe that there’s something “wrong” with the used item and they’ll stick with the default.
The used Buy Box will be the most valuable on books (and other items) that are only available in used condition and previously didn’t have a Buy Box at all. In this situation, I think that buyers will take advantage of the used Buy Box, just because it’s faster and easier than going to the offers page to compare.
