I came across this great slideshare presentation recently. It’s an in-depth look at the way the rest of the world uses the web. Here are some highlights:
- In other countries, Instagram is being used by vendors with physical storefronts to post items for sale and to connect with buyers. Think of it as a makeshift Amazon marketplace.
- China’s middle class grows by nearly 80,000 people every day. In China, shopping online is becoming the default form of commerce, rather than just a segment of it. And 90% of online retail in China takes place through online marketplaces like Tmall.
- In other countries, email, text and phones are being replaced by communications apps, like WeChat or WhatsApp.
- The big takeaway from this, for me, is that to be successful selling in emerging global markets will be to understand the local marketplaces and understand how local consumers find products and communicate.
