Weekly news round-up april 6 2012

weekly news round-up

It’s time for another weekly Amazon news round-up.

Amazon Tops List of Retail Genius – Amazon came out #1 in a ranking of 21 retailers, including Apple, Target and Walmart. The rankings were based on practicality, values, sensory appeal and social appeal. Isn’t it impressive that consumers ranked Amazon as more practical than a brick and mortar store? I was surprised that Apple was all the way down in 10th place, especially since they call their retail employees Geniuses!

First Third Party Sellers now Third Party Advertisers – Third party ads are becoming a bigger part of Amazon’s business model, especially for consumer packaged goods. Ads for these kinds of products, which include diapers and other household goods, are popping up on Amazon.com as well as on ad-supported Kindles. While mostly huge corporations have been part of these programs, do you think that value exists for smaller retailers as well?

Zappos and the Easter Ostrich Come to Portland –  This isn’t exactly Amazon seller news, but it got everyone in our Portland office excited! Zappos hid plastic eggs filled with gift cards around the city and tweeted hints about their location. Definitely one of the most clever and exciting promotions we’ve seen in awhile.

I guess it’s been a slow week in Amazon news. Did you come across something that I missed? Leave a comment here or find me on Twitter, @SellerEngine.
