Weekly news round-up july 13 2012

Happy Friday the 13th! This week in Amazon news, there are talks of job opportunities in Detroit, the ramifications of same-day delivery and the possibility of price wars caused by repricing tools. Also this week, we announced our partnership with Profit Bandit! We’re really excited about it and from what we’ve been hearing, so are lots of Amazon sellers!

Could Algorithmic Pricing Cause a Price Crash? – Slashdot cites a Financial Times article that questions whether repricing software could result in a sudden drop in prices. This is a fear that a lot of sellers have about using a repricing tool, like Sellery. However, with many tools (including Sellery) you can set a floor value that you’ll never price below. Adopting pricing strategies that focus on matching your strongest competitors can also prevent “repricing wars.” Also remember that the stock market crash mentioned in the article took place over the course of seconds and minutes, not the 15 minute or hourly increments common in Amazon repricing tools. So, long story short, yes, this scenario is possible, but shouldn’t keep you from using a repricer!

Will Amazon’s Same Day Delivery Kill Local Retail? – This is an interesting take on the non-stop Amazon sales tax stories that have been popping up on my radar for the past few months. This article theorizes that the reason Amazon has been giving in on sales tax is so that it can start implementing a fulfillment network that allows for next day delivery for many customers. I think that’s an interesting take, but I don’t agree that local retail will be “destroyed.” Sure, they’ll need to adapt, but that’s the nature of business!

Amazon May Create a Software Center in Detroit – A few job postings from Amazon for software engineers located in Detroit. I think this would be a great move for both Detroit and Amazon! And here are some pretty cool facts about the tech resurgence happening in Detroit, known as Detroit 2.0.
