news round-up

This week an Amazon news, a customer receives a surprise delivery, Amazon.co.uk has exciting news about ebook sales, Warner Bros. cracks down on pirated DVDs and more.

Man orders TV from Amazon — receives assault rifle – An Amazon.com shopper in Washington D.C. ordered a merchant-fulfilled television but when he received the package, inside was an illegal assault rifle! He called the police who seized the weapon, but he still doesn’t have his TV. There’s no explanation of exactly how this happened yet, but the best theory is that it’s a “UPS mix-up.”

Warner Bros. files mass lawsuits against Amazon resellers – Warner Bros. has filed suit against Amazon resellers for selling discounted and counterfeit DVDs. This does not look like an attempt to attack the used DVD market, according to a Warner spokesperson. We’ve heard of several big sellers who have had their accounts disabled over this. If you sell media, what do you do to protect yourself against selling counterfeit goods?

Amazon.co.uk ebook sales surpass print – Currently, overall sales of ebooks on Amazon.co.uk are exceeding sales of both hardback and paperback printed books. The growth is due in part to the hit novel 50 Shades of Grey, as well as the addition of the Harry Potter series to the Amazon ebook catalog.

Ask a Friend – It looks like this service was rolled out earlier in the summer, but I just started seeing it on my Amazon account this week. It’s Amazon’s attempt at “social shopping” where you can message friends about an item that you’re thinking about buying for their feedback. Has anyone out there used this feature? Or more importantly, has anyone made it a consistent part of their Amazon shopping experience?
