Normally I’d wait until the News Round-Up at the end of the week, but over the past weekend, the state of California began collecting sales tax on Amazon sales (and other online purchases).
What’s the response been like?
- The Big Loophole – According to this article, sales tax isn’t being charged on orders for items offered by 3rd Party Sellers. This loophole is apparently completely legal and will require national legislation to change. This was news to me!
- The Amazon Sales Tax Effect: Nada – According to a study of buyers in Texas (which started collecting sales tax earlier this Summer) very few altered their buying habits due to online sales tax. This is good news for Amazon sellers!
- Gizmodo’s Coverage of California Sales Tax – Lots of interesting points of view in the comments. What do you think?
Looking forward to seeing lots of you at SCOE in just over a week. And don’t forget about the SellerEngine Spark!
